Introduction
Ranitidine is an H2 receptor antagonist that reduces the production of stomach acid. However, it has been withdrawn in many markets due to safety concerns related to potential carcinogenic impurities.

Mechanism of Action
Ranitidine works by selectively blocking H2 receptors on the parietal cells of the stomach lining, which are responsible for producing gastric acid. Harmful Interactions
- Warfarin: Ranitidine can increase the effects of warfarin, leading to an increased risk of bleeding.
- Ketoconazole: The absorption of ketoconazole may be reduced in the presence of H2 blockers like ranitidine, decreasing its efficacy.
- Theophylline: Ranitidine may increase the plasma levels of theophylline, raising the risk of toxicity.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ranitidine or other H2 blockers.
- Severe liver dysfunction or cirrhosis (caution required in dosage adjustment).
- Concurrent use with certain drugs that depend on gastric pH for absorption, such as atazanavir.
